Local Journalism
Local Stories, Real Impact.
Shoresides is a community-driven journalism platform amplifying the voices of coastal North Carolina. In a region where many communities have seen their local newspapers close, we launched Shoresides to provide in-depth reporting, hyperlocal podcasts, and multimedia storytelling that reflects our region’s challenges and innovations.
Local journalism is more than just a source of information—it functions as a critical space for problem-solving and advancing health in communities. We provide people with the knowledge they need to make informed decisions about their health, safety, and civic engagement. Shoresides operates with this understanding, using solutions-based journalism to address the social determinants of health—whether it’s housing insecurity, environmental changes, or access to healthcare. By amplifying underrepresented voices and highlighting community-driven solutions, Shoresides strengthens civic participation and resilience, ensuring that news not only informs but also empowers action
Our Work
Original Reporting & Community Stories
We produce journalism that goes beyond headlines, addressing racial, economic, and environmental justice issues that shape coastal life. Shoresides’ reporting highlights systemic inequities, uplifts underrepresented voices, and connects local narratives to broader policy discussions.
Hyperlocal Podcasts & Digital Media
Our platform hosts 11 original podcasts covering everything from housing insecurity to climate change displacement. These include:
- Shoresides News – Investigating housing access and affordability in coastal communities.
- Hooked – A collection of stories featuring grassroots organizers, artists, and everyday residents driving change.
- Somewhere and Elsewhere – Exploring climate change, hurricanes, and environmental justice through local perspectives.
Training the Next Generation of Journalists
Through our Media Resilience Fellowship, we train emerging local residents to be community journalists, equipping them with the skills to produce impactful stories. We also run Coastal Youth Media, a program where young people develop leadership and storytelling abilities through media production. These programs help participants create radio stories, op-eds, and short documentaries.
Bridging Journalism & Civic Engagement
Shoresides isn’t just about reporting—it’s about action. We host public forums, collaborate with grassroots organizations, and provide media tools for communities to tell their own stories. Our journalism fosters civic participation and drives solutions-based storytelling.
