Weekly roundup: United Nations stories
The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) — best known for its designation of World Heritage Sites — last month released the second annual World Water Development Report. This year’s theme was water and jobs (75% of jobs worldwide depend heavily or moderately on water), and last year’s was water and sustainability. It’s heady stuff on water access, policy, and infrastructure. To complement the official report last year, UNESCO created a friendly website called “The Water Rooms,” with short videos, testimonials and monologues (such as the one above), artfully communicating its findings to a larger audience — thus building a constituency for better water access and policy. Similar work is in the works to complement this year’s report.
The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has released a graphic novel on the challenges faced by Roma women. “Daria: A Roma Woman’s Journey” is a touching look into the life of the title character. It was released last month to coincide with International Roma Day. Read about the graphic novel here, and again, read “Daria” itself here.
