Rural Narratives: Listening to Health, Belonging, and Opportunity Across North Carolina

Across rural North Carolina, community well-being depends on fairness, opportunity, and the strength of the systems and relationships that shape daily life.

Everyone deserves a fair chance to live in a place with clean water, safe workplaces, dependable information, and responsive public health services — conditions that help families thrive and neighborhoods flourish.

Yet many communities still grapple with the effects of underinvestment, mistrust, and exclusion that have not treated all residents with equal dignity and respect — especially Black, Indigenous, LGBTQIA+, and working-class communities.

Rural Narratives is a podcast from Narrative Arts that views storytelling as a civic act and a practice of listening. Through conversations with people from towns and counties across the state, the series explores how community voices, public systems, and everyday life intersect to shape health, belonging, and opportunity — in families’ histories, workplaces, land stewardship, caregiving, and community leadership.

You’ll hear from county leaders and local organizers, health workers and farmers, neighbors and caregivers — each sharing how their stories connect with the policies and systems that affect their lives and their communities.

The first episode launches next Wednesday, February 25.
