Today, Narrative Arts’ local journalism outlet Shoresides—covering coastal North Carolina– was named a Press Forward grant recipient. Shoresides joins this inaugural, historic cohort of more than 200 local newsrooms across the country filling critical information gaps and working in service of our communities.
(Meet the Shoresides team)
Since 2018, Shoresides has been on the frontlines as our region’s nonprofit civic journalism lab and producing stories, training civic journalists, and bringing communities together to build a healthy media ecology for the region.
A review panel of national foundation and journalism leaders read about how our local journalism and youth media work is making a difference, right here at home.
Over the years, we have:
We have deployed journalists and community correspondents across coastal North Carolina to share stories of displacement and resilience. Through podcasts, documentaries, and youth media, we harness the power of journalism to speak truth to power. Our work has addressed issues such as the damage caused by hog farming, inequities in hurricane recovery, and the challenges of affordable housing. We also reflect positive local stories, from the wisdom of elders to the art of crafting duck decoys.
The $100,000 that we are receiving from Press Forward is more than just a grant. It’s a symbolic gesture that national funders are investing in Shoresides and ultimately, in the coastal North Carolina region and its residents.
This grant is wonderful news, but we need local support to sustain this work for the long term — for all of us. Will you help us celebrate this moment and prepare for what’s ahead by making a gift to Shoresides today? Support Shoresides.
Thank you for believing in Narrative Arts and Shoresides. We look forward to serving the coastal North Carolina region for years to come.
