STORIES FROM ACROSS NORTH CAROLINA

Six films. Six communities. Follow the series as it unfolds across North Carolina.

HEALTH IS SOMETHING WE BUILD TOGETHER.

What makes it possible for people to live healthy lives across North Carolina?

The answer is bigger than healthcare.

It depends on the conditions people encounter every day: whether the water is clean, housing is safe, help is within reach, information can be trusted, and people have a say in the decisions that shape their lives.

Across North Carolina, people are answering that question from where they live.

Taken together, their stories reveal a fuller picture of public health—one shaped by place, relationships, public institutions, and the power communities have to shape their own futures.

They’re built through relationships. They’re built through trust. And they’re built together.

STORIES ARE PART OF THE WORK

Narrative Arts works alongside residents, community organizations, public health practitioners, journalists, and local leaders to understand how people experience the systems around them.

The films grow from conversations, interviews, story circles, and time spent in communities. They make visible connections that can be difficult to see: between a personal experience and a public decision, between local knowledge and institutional practice, between the strength of a relationship and the health of a community.

And the work doesn’t end when a film is finished.

These stories return to communities through screenings, conversations, and learning spaces—bringing together people who experience public systems and people who work within them.

Because telling a story can do more than document what happened. It can change who gets heard, what gets understood, and what people believe is possible.

“I chose to come back here to my home county. I have family ties here, and I want to see everyone here do well. That’s really important to me.”

HOW HEALTH HAPPENS

How Health Happens is part of a broader Narrative Arts effort working alongside North Carolina communities to explore how storytelling can make visible and strengthen connections among communities, relationships, and the public systems people rely on every day.

The work extends beyond these films through community conversations, story circles, screenings, public-health learning, and opportunities for residents and practitioners to learn from one another.
